Granite polishing: hard stone, different rules

Granite is tough, and that is exactly why floors go wrong. Because it resists wear so well, most people only notice a problem years later, when the top has gone grey or cloudy and the joints have darkened. Grinding granite is not the same as grinding marble: the machine needs more weight, the diamond pads are a different bond, and the finishing step decides whether it looks deep or flat.

What we look at first

• Whether the surface is factory-polished slab or site-installed tile — the starting point changes the plan.
• Etching and cloudiness from acidic cleaners, which are common on granite counters.
• Chipped edges, dark joints and any hollow bedding.
• Sealing history: unsealed granite stains, sealed granite can look patchy once the sealer wears unevenly.

The process

We clean the grit off first, then grind to a flat surface and work through the diamond grits to a consistent finish. Edges and counters are done with smaller machines and pads. Where needed we seal the stone to slow staining, and we tell you honestly when a counter is better polished dry than wet.

Rates and practical notes

As a working band: a light re-polish is roughly Rs.15–25 per sq.ft, deeper restoration Rs.25–40, and counters, stairs and cladding are quoted separately. Granite work is slower than marble, so allow more time per room. Dust is managed wet where possible, and slurry is bagged before we leave.
